Description High resolution images can be obtained by scanning the tissue and stitching individual parts of the images together (like tiles). This method overcomes the optical limitations and enables obtaining images of arbitrary size. We have developed the user's interface in the form of virtual microscope, enabling the access to very large images using the Internet browser. Our approach is based on JavaScript. The images is split into parts (256x256 px). Users can drag the image using the mouse and change the magnification. The browsers downloads only those parts of the image, which are necessary. Those image parts, which are no longer necessary, are released from memory. Users can change the size of the browser window (up to full screen), drag the image and change the magnification. Virtual slides can catch the whole slide (not only selected areas with typical features) and therefore can have certain forensic value. This interface is used in the Atlas of Dermatopathology, Atlas of Fetal and Neonatal Pathology and Hypertext Atlas of Pathology for pregraduate students and is integrated into the atlas. Most of these images are annotated, so that arrows pointing to important imagage details can be activated. The atlases are located at www.muni.cz/atlases.
