Description The aim of o ur rese arch was to ascertain the current situ ati on in detecti on of depressi on in a common seni or populati on and to ascertain the effect of depressi on on the seniors health and functional status. Patient sample and methods. The pati ent sample comprised of 161 seni ors over 65 ye ars of age, living in their own environment and being in the care of general practiti oners and geri atrists. These pati ents were assessed using geri atric functi onal assessment tests and the core laboratory assessments battery. We analyzed the prevalence of di agnosed and undi agnosed depressi on and compared overall he alth and functi onal status of seni ors with and witho ut depressi on. Results. Depressi on was di agnosed in 30 (18.6%) seni ors in the rese arched sample; only 4 (2.5%) were treated. Seni ors with depressi on had significantly lover cognitive performance (Mini Mental - State Examinati on test - MMSE), significantly worse results of the self - suffici ency test (Activiti es of Daily Living - ADL, Instrumental ADL Scale - IADL), used higher number of drugs and had higher number of di agnoses for which they were tre ated. Conclusi ons. 1. Depressi on in an ordinary seni or populati on is underdi agnosed and thus insufficiently tre ated. 2. Untreated depressi on significantly worsens the he alth status prognosis of seni ors and their self - suffici ency. 3. Pati ents with untre ated depressi on tend significantly towards higher consumpti on of he alth care. 4. It is necessary in ro utine practice to actively se arch for seniors with depressi on and to manage their depressi on.
