| Description | The paper summarizes the history of the section as the basic method of human body studies. Public preparations of animals were carried out at first. The first documented reports of human body autopsies date back to the period round 1315 in Bologna. Physicians started to perform autopsies of human bodies publicly at the 15th century (Theatrum anatomicum). Autopsies used to be carried out in winter period, so that the dead body decomposition was slower. The preserving effect of formaldehyde on proteins was proved in the 19th century and bodies of deceased started to be saturated by preserving solutions with formaldehyde. The introduction of this preserving method facilitated a long time preservation of dead bodies. A plastination belongs to the most modern methods of dead bodies preservation nowadays. It is based on replacing water and fat in a human body by a plastic. Organs treated in this way preserve their original colours and are long-lasting. |
