| Description | Epimacular membranes occur spontaneously or as a result of other eye diseases. An idiopathic epimacular membrane typically develops in eyes with posterior vitreous membrane separation mostly in patients over 50 years. Glial cells and retinal pigment epithelium cells proliferate along the surface of the internal limiting membrane and creates own structure of epimacular membrane. Maturation of membranes leads to their contraction, which leads to a tangential traction with wrinkling of neuroretina in the macular region. The patient begins to feel at this stage of the disease decrease in vision and metamorphopsia. Each patient underwent on affected eye standard PPV with peeling epiretinal and internal limiting membrane. Trypane blue staining has been used to facilitate peeling. If peripheral vitreoretinal pathology was not present were operated eyes left without tamponade. Peeling of idiopathic epimacular membranes via PPV is the method of choice in treating this clinical entity. Modern vitreoretinal techniques, together with staining, using trypane blue makes this method of treatment highly effective and safe. |
