Description Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of severe vision loss in developed countries in the population over 65 years of age. It is a multifactorial disease caused by a combination of environmental influences and genetic factors. Disease occurs in two basic forms: dry form (it is affected by about 80% of patients) and wet (it is affected by about 20% of patients). If the disease is not diagnosed and treated in time, there is a marked decrease in visual acuity, which is accompanied by a breakdown in the central field of vision, distorted vision (metamorphopsia), difficulties with reading, seeing of details, difficulties in orientation in an unfamiliar environment and when driving a car. Another unfavorable factor is the increasing incidence of early stages of AMD in the younger age categories, which represents a serious economic problem. Prevalence increases with age. This means that AMD has a close bond age. The population is older, the more its members are affected by AMD. It is a proven high affinity AMD to white race, and very low frequency of late forms of AMD in the black race. Another equally interesting fact is closely related disease to smoking, genetic load, the risk of atherosclerosis, excessive exposure to light, the lack of antioxidants in the diet, the cataract surgery and systemic hypertension.
