| Description | Gender differences in the successful treatment of smoking dependence have been identified; women have greater difficulties in quitting smoking compared to men. Women reported higher levels of withdrawal symptoms and craving and diminished effectiveness of nicotine replacement therapy. Sex hormones, especially estrogen, may play a role both in the metabolism of nicotine, Cortisol concentrations, carving, withdrawal symptoms and risk of relapse. |
