Description Examination of oral membrane mucous is an important part of comprehensive examination in dentistry. Dentists are frequently the first medical professionals to examine patients who have oral mucosal changes. Therefore the responsibility of the dentist as the first examiner is significant. Etiology of mucous diseases is a multi-factorial one. Local lesions can be caused by mechanical, thermal and chemical factors. Besides these external effects, internal factors, such as nutritional (iron and vitamin) deficiencies, endocrine, metabolic and some genetic diseases play a role. Some of internal disorders affect the oral cavity including infections, allergic, autoimmune and rheumatologic diseases, blood diseases, skin diseases and cancers as well.
