Description The article provides a basic overview of approaches used in patients after acute myocardial infarction, mostly managed nowadays by coronary angioplasty with stent implantation. Lifestyle changes include strict smoking cessation, appropriate diet and rehabilitation programs. As for pharmacotherapy, basic classes of medications are listed that should be taken by patients after acute myocardial infarction and for which trials provided robust data concerning mortality reduction – antiaggregation treatment, hypolipidemics, betablockers and agents modifying the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Implantation of cardioverter-defibrillator should be considered in patients with high risk of sudden death.
