Description The dissertation thesis deals with the topic language skills in Czech lower-secondary English classes. The research is a part of CPV Video Study employing a video-based methodology which is used to carry out observational analyses of the processes of teaching and learning in various school subjects. We focused on the communicative approach as the leading approach in foreign language education and the communicative competence as the goal of foreign language education. The question is whether and to what extent the goals of foreign language education are reflected in English classes in the Czech Republic. The general purpose of the research was to explore the quantity of opportunities which pupils have to develop language skills. A research instrument – a system of categories was developed. The research findings showed that pupils had more opportunities to use receptive skills (listening and reading) then productive skills (speaking and writing), but these opportunities differed among teachers. Major differences were found in the use of target language and mother tongue in the observed lessons. In some teachers the prevalent language of instruction is English, whereas in some teachers Czech is used predominantly. These differences imply that pupils have different opportunities to learn among different teachers. What we consider consider to be a significant factor of these findings are the different opportunities to learn at the input level – a low number of qualified teachers in Czech classes of English.
