Description The ribosomal L1 stalk is assumed to play important role in releasing deacylated tRNA from ribosome. During elongation cycle, L1 stalk moves between three distinct positions in relation to large subunit, crossing a distance of up to 60 A. We performed molecular dynamics simulations of L1 stalk taken from structure of Thermus thermophilus ribosome. The simulations revealed significant structural changes in L1 stalk/tRNA boundary, which might be important in facilitation of tRNA release. We also observed coupling between L1 RNA and L1 protein movement in relation to tRNA, which suggests critical role of protein-nucleic acid interactions for L1 stalk function.
