Description The research has repeatedly demonstrated a significant effect of continuous support during labor on the maternal psyche and birth outcomes. Continuous support for women giving birth is not a normal part of care provided by health professionals, instead, the intermittent care model is applied. In comparison with the continuous model of providing support, however, this model seems to be significantly less favorable mainly to the following criteria: length of labor, use of analgesia, use of oxytocin and a number of caesarean sections. The purpose of this paper is to present a relatively new profession of doulas. It deals with the history of this profession and the contents of a doula´s work. It is based on the fact that the vast majority of professionals have not been familiar with the contents of doula’s education and especially with limits of their profession, so the survey study briefly describes these topics. Through the presentation of the results of empirical studies, the paper summarizes the benefits of doula care and possible future challenges. Last but not least, it also affects the position of doulas in the existing system of care, their acceptance by the medical staff and the cooperation with them. In short, it mentions two organizations that bring together doulas in the Czech Republic, as well as similar organizations in the world. Most of these topics provide a comparison between the situation in our country and abroad.
