Description The means of primary and secondary prevention lower significantly the risk of stroke. Hypertension is the most important risk factor. Mild reduction in the systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure is associated with 42% lowering of stroke incidence. In stroke survivors, antihypertensive therapy reduces the risk of recurrence – including those whose blood pressure is considered normal. Evidence supporting this treatment was obtained mostly for the combination of an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor with a diuretic agent.
