Description New oral anticoagulants (NOACs) are globally globally mentioned in recommended practices for the treatment of fibrillation (FS) as the preferred group of anticoagulants for the prevention of stroke in patients with FS. The acronym NOAC has been in use for many years, and is used by the current recommended practices for the treatment of atrial fibrillation, which European Society of Cardiology [ESC] AF guidelines, and is almost universally accepted. Therefore, although some authors refer to this class of drugs as "direct oral anticoagulants" (direct oral anticoagulant, DOAC), we prefer to continue to use the acronym NOAC; finally, because both acronyms are interchangeable when used to refer to direct factor Xa inhibitors apixaban, edoxaban and rivaroxaban as well as the direct thrombin inhibitor dabigatran.
