Description Aims of the study: In the prospective study the authors evaluated the state of the corneal endothelium before and one year after the penetrating keratoplasty. Conclusions: The decrease of the endothelial cell density during the first year after the penetrating keratoplasty is the key factor determining the future healing of the cornea. We have found no statically significant difference between the transplantated corneas stored in the Optisol medium and those preserved in the tissue culture. We have also found that the risk of keratoplasty is an important factor influencing the endothelial cell density after the surgery.
