Is Flow Cytometry Able to Distinguish Monoclonal Gammopathies and/or Multiple Myeloma Subtypes with Good Prognosis?

Description The aim of this study is to find relationship between PCs phenotype and prognosis of monoclonal gammopathy patients. Flow cytometric analysis of PCs phenotype was done in 175 untreated patients with MM (all clinical stages) and 77 MGUS subjects. Acquired information was compared with available clinical data. According to the expression CD19 on PCs there was found 12 MGUS cases with more than 95% pathological PCs, these cases should be suspect from early progression to MM. On the other hand, there was found 16 MM patients with more than 5% of normal PCs and these cases should have a better prognosis. There was found not many changes in expression of other markers, excluding CD27, when compared MGUS and MM.Role of immunophenotyping in monitoring of monoclonal gammopathy is still discussed at this moment. Our results show capability of flow cytometry to distinguish normal and aberrant plasma cells in very low number, but detailed long-term investigation in this area is still needed.
