| Description | Coeliac disease is a systemic immune-mediated disease with a highly variable phenotype manifesting in genetically predisposed people who consume gluten. Coeliac crisis is a life-threatening condition and can occur at onset of the disease’s clinical manifestation. It manifests in profuse diarrhoea, hypoproteinaemia, and numerous metabolic disturbances. This condition requires rapid diagnosis and treatment. The present report describes the case of a toddler with long-term symptoms, specifically poor growth and development and repeated stomach pain. These symptoms progressed into frequent diarrhoea with alterations in the overall condition and breakdown of the internal environment. The patient was then diagnosed with coeliac sprue. The condition required a stay of longer than 3 weeks at an intensive care unit with the need for total parenteral nutrition and systemic administration of corticosteroids. Despite considerable advances in coeliac disease diagnostics and increasing awareness among the general and professional public, the possibility of such acute initial manifestations of the disease must be taken into account. |
