Description This study evaluated the ability of acellular nerve and muscle grafts as well as knitwear nerve prosthesis covered by collagen 1 to enhance the recovery of function in injured rat sciatic nerves. Recovery of motor function was assessed by means of behavioural, electrophysiological and morphological methods. Proximal nerve slump stimulation as well as EMG measurements showed that both muscle and nerve acellular grafts as well as artificial wrapped nerve prosthesis were suitable conduits for regrowing axons that recovered functional connections with the skeletal muscles. Immunohistochemical and electron microscopical techniques confirmed the presence of myelinated axons in the nerve outgrowth and in the distal stumps. The artificial wrapped prosthesis seems to be promising for future consideration in nerve grafting.
