The new EAS consensus documents represent a major advance in the prevention and treatment of lipid metabolism disorders

At the May congress of the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) in Athens, two significant consensus documents were presented, to which Tomáš Freiberger of the Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergology and the Center for Cardiovascular and Transplant Surgery in Brno contributed as an author. Both documents provide important updates in the field of prevention and treatment of lipid metabolism disorders and are already generating significant attention from both the professional community and the media.

Our faculty has confirmed its status as an outstanding research institution

In 2025, the Faculty of Medicine and Masaryk University as a whole underwent its second national evaluation of higher education institutions. The Czech Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports has now published the evaluation results compiled by international evaluators. Both the faculty and the university received an overall grade of A, meaning “excellent.” This confirms our position among the leaders in Czech biomedical research.

He arrived in Brno from Spain as an intern and is leaving as a PhD graduate and award-winning scientist. During his time at our faculty, Marcos González López gained recognition for his research on stem cells, tooth growth, and tooth regeneration. In this interview, he discusses his scientific journey, life in Brno, the importance of science communication, and why understanding the loss of tooth regeneration in humans is one of the most fascinating questions in contemporary biology.

Šárka Pospíšilová in Forbes’ list of the most influential women in the Czech Republic for 2026

The head of the Department of Medical Genetics and Genomics, who serves on the university’s leadership as vice-rector for research and doctoral studies and is also active researcher at CEITEC MU, was named by Forbes magazine to this year’s list of the most influential women in the Czech Republic. Alongside her, MU is also represented by Kateřina Šimáčková, a judge at the European Court of Human Rights and an academic at the Faculty of Law.

President Pavel appointed three new professors from our faculty

On the first day of June, President Petr Pavel presented letters of appointment to 91 new professors. Among those appointed were Martin Fiala (Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology, University Hospital Brno), Marek Joukal (Department of Anatomy), and Roman Panovský (First Department of Internal Medicine and Cardioangiology, St. Anne´s University Hospital).

To bring together the broader scientific community from laboratories and clinics, inspire one another, establish collaborations, and celebrate current achievements. With this goal in mind, Research Day was held for the first time on May 20.
